Moderate 5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Jamaica

KINGSTON, JAMAICA — A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 struck the Jamaica region early Tuesday morning, February 10, 2026, sending tremors across several parishes and sparking concern among residents.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 8:18 AM GMT (3:18 AM local time). According to the Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies, the quake's epicenter was located near Manchioneal in the eastern parish of Portland, at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers.

Widespread Tremors

The shaking was felt most intensely in the eastern parishes of Portland, St. Thomas, and St. Mary, but residents in the capital, Kingston, and as far away as St. Ann also reported feeling the vibration. Many Jamaicans, still in bed or just starting their day, took to social media to report the incident, describing the sensation as a "sharp jolt" followed by several seconds of swaying.

"It woke me out of my sleep," one resident in Port Antonio reported. "The windows were rattling, and you could hear the house creaking for a good few seconds."

Damage and Casualties

Initial reports from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) suggest that there have been no immediate reports of major structural damage or casualties. Emergency services are currently conducting assessments in the areas closest to the epicenter to check for minor damage, such as cracked walls or fallen debris.

While no major power outages were reported immediately following the tremor, some localized flickers in electricity and internet service were noted in parts of eastern Jamaica.

A Geological Reminder

This morning's quake serves as a stark reminder of Jamaica's location along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone. While small tremors are common on the island, moderate events like today’s 5.3 magnitude quake often prompt a review of safety protocols.

Authorities are urging citizens to remain calm and be prepared for potential aftershocks, which are common following a quake of this magnitude. Residents are reminded of the "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" protocol during seismic activity.

Official Advice:

- Stay Calm: Avoid running outside during shaking.

- Check for Hazards: After the shaking stops, check your home for gas leaks or structural cracks.

- Stay Informed: Monitor local radio and official social media channels for updates from the Earthquake Unit and ODPEM.

As of now, all major infrastructure including airports and hospitals remains operational.

Did you feel the shaking in your area, or are you looking for more information on how to prepare for aftershocks?
